With the update to iOS 17, Apple changed the default notification sound on the iPhone, which was met with little enthusiasm by many users. Some found it too quiet while others preferred the old sound. But with the latest software update, iOS 17.2, you now have the option to customize your notification sound to your liking. Here's how to do it.
Previously, you could choose your own ringtones and text tones on your iPhone, whether by creating your own tones in GarageBand or purchasing tones from the App Store. You had the freedom to set individual notification tones for incoming calls, text messages, voice messages, emails, and calendar and reminder notifications. However, there was no way to change the default notification tone, which meant everyone had to use the same default tones. With iOS 17.2, Apple removed this limitation and added the ability to customize the default notification tone. Before you get started, check that your iPhone or iPad is updated to the latest software version. You can find the option under Settings -> General -> Software Update.
How to change your notification tone
- Open the Settings app.
- Go to the Sounds & Haptics section.
- Select “Default hints”.
- Here you can select your new notification tone. You can choose between pre-installed tones, but you can also purchase new tones in the Tone Store or use your own sound.
- Additionally, you can customize the haptic vibration by going to “Default cues” -> “Haptics”.
- Save your changes by clicking “Back”.
- From this point on, whenever the default notification sound is used, your iPhone will play the sound you selected.
This setting affects the sound of apps that use the default notification sound, including apps like Facebook and Instagram. Note, however, that this won't affect apps that use their own custom sounds. The notification sound used by Apple's Messages app can be adjusted separately in the Sounds & Haptics settings under Message Sound.
How to restore the default notification sound
If you don't like the new notification sound after updating to iOS 17 and want to go back to the old sounds, you can do that too. The default value of iOS 17 is "Bounce". You can go to the sound settings and set "Triad" as the new default notification sound. With these steps, you can customize your notification sound to your liking and create a personalized experience on your iPhone. Enjoy the freedom to choose your favorite sound and personalize your notifications. Looking for new accessories?
