The AirPods are one of Apple's best-selling wearables. Initially frowned upon, today almost everyone wears the white earphones. Thanks to iOS 14, a few new functions are finally being made available for the AirPods after more than three years.
“Spatial Audio” AirPods Pro
It starts with the unique sound experience of the AirPods Pro. Under iOS 14, the Pro version of the AirPods will have "Spatial Audio". This feature was introduced during WWDC 2020 in June. For the spatial sound, Apple uses dynamic head tracking and the position of the iPhone to create a cinematic surround sound, a sound experience that makes it feel like you are right in the film. The gyroscope and accelerometer in the AirPods Pro analyze head movements. The comparison then helps to adapt the sounds and reproduce them in the right direction in the earpiece. However, this function will only be available with a later firmware update, so beta users cannot currently access the feature.
iOS 14: Automatic switching
The following new features will be available for both AirPods and AirPods Pro. By using multiple Apple devices under one and the same Apple ID, it will be possible to automatically switch the AirPods between the devices. This means that if you are listening to music on your iPhone but start a movie on your iPad, the AirPods will automatically connect to the iPad. Manual switching is no longer necessary. The same applies from iPad to Apple Watch, etc., because all operating systems (iPadOS, iOS, macOS and watchOS) will support the feature support.
The battery notification
Another useful feature is the battery notification for Apple's white earbuds. This means that from now on, users will not only receive a warning tone via the AirPods but also a notification on the iPhone, iPad or Mac. Speaking of charging: The AirPods will also optimized Support charging - known from the iPhone. This means that iOS 14 now also controls the charging of the AirPods. In the past, many AirPods users have complained about battery problems. For example, the battery of the AirPods 1 and 2 is said to have deteriorated significantly after around a year. It can be assumed that the new feature will have a positive effect on the life cycle of the battery.
AirPods: Headphone adjustment and audio sharing
Another feature that will be introduced in iOS 14 is called headphone adjustment. Users can adjust the volume for each AirPod individually. This is important for users who have difficulty hearing in one ear than the other. There will also be audio sharing for the Apple TV. This means that from iOS 14 onwards, users will be able to connect two pairs of AirPods to the Apple TV 4K. Don't have AirPods yet?
