Wi-Fi passwords can be very long and complicated, which makes sharing them with friends and family a little difficult. Fortunately, Apple has developed a sharing feature with iOS 11 that makes sharing much easier.
Most people know it: friends come to visit and the first question is: what is your WiFi password? If you don't have it to hand, you can't avoid going to the router - a common situation before iOS 11 was released. Many iOS users or even newcomers are still unaware of this useful feature. That's why we would like to take a closer look at the whole thing.
What do I need to share Wi-Fi passwords on an iPhone or iPad?
Previously, you had to download an app to share WiFi passwords wirelessly on an iPhone or iPad. However, these so-called WiFi password sharing applications were unreliable and often caused software crashes. To benefit from Apple's simple solution, the device in question must be running at least iOS 11 (fall 2017) or newer. By the way: Mac devices have also supported this function since macOS High Sierra. If you are ready to share your password on another iPhone or iPad, please make sure that both devices are next to each other - if the devices are too far apart, the WiFi password may not be passed on.
How to share the Wi-Fi password on an iPhone or iPad
The recipient must first select the Settings app and then tap on Wi-Fi. The next step is to find the network you want to join. Now the device must be held up to an iPhone or iPad that is already connected to the Wi-Fi network. To complete the transfer, the iPhone or iPad must be unlocked. The message "Would you like to share your Wi-Fi password?" then appears. By confirming this message, the password is sent to the recipient's device. By the way: the user of the recipient's device cannot see the password themselves.
