What is the difference between the AirPods 1 and AirPods 2? This question is asked so often on the internet that another article on the subject seems quite sensible. That's why we would like to show you the differences and perhaps help you with a purchasing decision.
The Apple AirPods were first presented and introduced at an event in 2016. Many people initially made fun of the small white plugs - today they are an indispensable part of most Apple fans' lives and a box office hit for Cupertino. In March of this year, Apple introduced the second generation of its popular AirPods. Some fans were disappointed with the update because they had higher expectations. The actual innovations are still remarkable. But is the upgrade really worth it for AirPods 1 owners?
The differences are not directly visible
The differences between the first and second generation AirPods are not immediately visible. If you look at the design, you'll quickly see that they are identical. On the inside, however, there are a few changes. While the AirPods 1 are powered by a W1 chip, the AirPods 2 are equipped with the new H1 chip. If you like using Siri, you have to tap one of the plugs on the first generation. (You can find everything about Siri here) The AirPods 2, on the other hand, support the voice command "Hey Siri" - a detail that some fans consider important. Other improvements to the second generation of AirPods include better audio and voice quality, up to 50 percent longer talk time and a faster connection to compatible devices - even switching devices should be much quicker with the AirPods 2. Both generations of plugs are charged via a supplied charging case. This can provide up to 24 hours of battery life. The new version of the charging case supports wireless charging. This case can be ordered in combination with the AirPods 2 or purchased separately. So is the upgrade worth it? In short - no. The new charging case is also compatible with the first generation of AirPods and, as mentioned above, can be purchased separately.
What are the system requirements for the AirPods?
There are a few differences here too - the reason for this is the two chips. The AirPods 1 require iOS 10 for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, while the AirPods 2 require at least iOS 12.2. If you want to pair the AirPods with an Apple Watch, the first generation requires at least watchOS 3, while the second generation of AirPods requires watchOS 5.2. If you want to connect the popular earbuds to a Mac device, you need at least macOS High Sierra or macOS 10.14.4 for the AirPods 2. Both generations are also compatible with the Apple TV.
Which version of AirPods 2 is recommended?
As already mentioned above, the AirPods 2 can be purchased with either the old charging case or the new version of the charging case that supports wireless charging. Of course, there is a price difference here. However, it is recommended to buy the new version if the user already has Qi charging stations and uses the feature on the iPhone. For example, if you have a wireless charging station in your car, you should also go for the new version. Users of the AirPods 1 can also use the new charging case, as already mentioned, and purchase it separately.
How expensive are the individual versions?
With the introduction of the AirPods 2, Apple discontinued the first generation. These can only be found as remaining stock in some markets. The AirPods 2 with a normal charging case cost 179 euros from Apple. The version with a wireless charging case costs 229 euros and the charging case itself costs around 89 euros. The prices vary from platform to platform - Amazon is currently offering top prices. If you have functional AirPods 1, you shouldn't necessarily go for the second generation - but the new charging case is worth noting - for QI fans (remember - it is sold separately). Those who don't currently have AirPods but are interested in them can go for the new version without hesitation - you will like them. However, there is certainly no need to upgrade - save your money.
