Apple introduced the iPhone 16e earlier this year, marking a new path. Instead of launching another iPhone SE, Apple presented the device as part of the main lineup. This raises an important question: Will there be an iPhone 17e next year? Here's what's known so far.
The launch of the iPhone 16e has sparked considerable discussion. It's a slimmed-down iPhone 16, but instead of being marketed as an "SE" like previous affordable models, Apple has integrated it directly into the main lineup. This strategy has advantages, but also creates uncertainty: Does Apple plan to regularly update this "e" line? This becomes particularly exciting with a possible iPhone 17e in 2026.
iPhone 16e as a new path for Apple
The iPhone 16e is essentially a simplified iPhone 16. Apple has done two main things here: first, it redesigned the previous iPhone SE, and second, it repositioned itself within the main iPhone lineup. Mark Gurman of Bloomberg explains that this move is strategically particularly interesting for markets like China. In countries where cheaper smartphones are in high demand, Apple can score points with it without giving the impression of a "cheap iPhone." Instead of presenting the device as an SE model, it is marketed under the name of the current generation. This gives the device more prestige, even though it is technically somewhat slimmed down. At the same time, it remains modern enough to compete with other mid-range smartphones.
Will there be an iPhone 17e?
According to Gurman, Apple has not yet made a final decision on whether there will be an iPhone 17e. Apple is closely monitoring the market and sales figures for the iPhone 16e. It will likely only become clear in the coming months whether the "e" strategy will be continued. Should Apple launch an iPhone 17e, a similar release period to that of the iPhone 16e would be realistic. So, you can expect a new model to appear in late winter or spring 2026, similar to previous SE models (via Bloomberg).
What could the iPhone 17e offer?
If Apple decides to go with the iPhone 17e, the expectations are relatively clear. Major changes in design or features aren't expected. Instead, Apple would likely address the following issues:
- The processor: The iPhone 17e would probably get the latest A19 chip to stay up to date technically.
- New features: Minor features from the iPhone 17 series could be adopted. A realistic option would be the introduction of improved camera controls, which are still missing from the iPhone 16e.
- Design and concept: Apple is likely to stick with the basic concept of the iPhone 16e. This means a modern, yet stripped-down iPhone experience at a lower price.
Mark Gurman believes that an annual update of the “e” line would be useful in order to better compete with other manufacturers in the low-end and mid-range segment.
Apple hesitates: Decision on iPhone 17e pending
Whether there will be an iPhone 17e is still unknown. Apple is currently closely monitoring how the iPhone 16e performs before making a decision. If the market reacts positively, an iPhone 17e is likely next year. If Apple continues with its plan, you can expect a modern, more affordable iPhone that, while somewhat slimmed down in terms of technology, still offers many of the features of the main models. There are no concrete rumors or leaks yet, so it will be a few months before we know more. Stay tuned if you're hoping for a more affordable iPhone with the latest technology.
