Apple is reportedly considering introducing its own cloud-based gaming service, which will be similar to Nvidia's GeForce Now and Google's Stadia.
Cloud gaming services offer gamers the ability to play games in high graphical quality by rendering the gameplay in the cloud and streaming a live video feed to the user’s devices. Now it seems that Apple at least once thought about joining the list of companies that offer such services to their users. Mark Gurman writes in his latest newsletter issue "Power On" that Apple is actually considering such a service. Apple Arcade is "unique in that it relies on games running on the device itself rather than in the cloud," writes Gurman, pointing out that Apple's service is different from other cloud gaming services.
Apple Cloud Gaming Service: Apple Arcade Has an Unfair Advantage
While Microsoft, Nvidia, Google and others are using cloud gaming to "support a wider range of games" because they handle graphics processing for the host device, it's not an entirely level playing field. Although Apple Arcade games are available on the App Store, Apple's policies stand in the way of the other services. To get around this, some services are taking advantage of Safari's capabilities to offer the same service through the browser, thus bypassing App Store restrictions. Even considering that Apple prefers on-device processing to cloud streaming, Gurman doesn't give up hope that such a service could one day be launched. (Photo by Unsplash / Fábio Silva)
