Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has revised his forecast for the official debut of Apple's highly anticipated augmented reality device and now expects the company to announce it in spring 2023.
The analyst according to Apple is still facing delays with its mixed reality headset. He refers to problems "with the testing of mechanical components and the availability of software development tools". For this reason, it is increasingly unlikely that Apple will announce the headset at a media event in January. Kuo believes that the company will instead announce it at an Apple event in the spring or at the annual Worldwide Developers Conference in June. While he believes the device could be announced in the first half of 2023, he does not expect it to ship before the end of the second or third quarter of 2023.
Apple's mixed reality headset to launch in 2023
In December, Apple reportedly changed the name of its mixed reality operating system to "xrOS", hinting that the company could be on the verge of releasing a mixed reality headset. Apple's first headset, which is currently in an "advanced" stage of development, could include two 4K OLED displays, 15 externally mounted camera modules and potential support for eye-tracking and hand gestures. The first wave could also be an expensive headset, for which prices of up to 3,000 US dollars are realistic. In a detailed report by The Information earlier this week listed a long list of features for the long-discussed device, including a Digital Crown-like dial for switching between virtual and physical viewing modes and more.
