Apple is planning to introduce a new external display for Macs that can also be used as a smart home display. Mark Gurman reports on this in his current Power On newsletter. It is believed that this display is designed as a direct successor to the Pro Display XDR and the Apple Studio Display. The special feature of this new display is its function as a smart home device in sleep mode. Powered by an iOS device chip, it offers a variety of intelligent functions. However, according to Gurman, the release of the smart display is not expected until next year at the earliest.
Apple has already achieved excellence in the field of external monitors with the Pro Display XDR and the Apple Studio Display. Now the company is striving to offer even more innovative and versatile options. The new Smart Display promises not only impressive visual quality but also the integration of smart home functions. Apple's Smart Display is expected to be powered by an iOS device chip, similar to the Apple Studio Display, which is powered internally by an A13 chip.
Apple Display: New smart home device for Macs with revolutionary features
However, the intelligence of the software in the Studio Display only extends to the camera and the speaker system with functions such as Center Stage and Spatial Audio. The functions of the new Smart Display, on the other hand, are said to go far beyond that. An interesting aspect is the ability to use the display as a smart home device in power-saving idle mode. It is speculated that the user interface of the iPhone's new standby function in iOS 17 could also be transferred to the Smart Display. This would give the user the opportunity to use the display for smart home controls, notifications and other functions even when the Mac is not actively in use. Although the exact release date of the Smart Display is not yet known, calculates Mark Gurman only expects an introduction next year. It remains to be seen how Apple will exploit the potential of the display and what innovative features and integrations it will offer. (Image: Apple)
