This year, Apple fans can look forward to some exciting new developments. The technology giant plans to launch new Mac models with the powerful M4 chip. This update affects the M4 MacBook Pro, the Mac mini and the iMac. There are also interesting details about the future updates of other models such as the MacBook Air, Mac Studio and Mac Pro.
Apple introduced the M3 chips at its "Scary Fast" event last October, updating the MacBook Pro and iMac models. But Apple's innovation machine never stands still. This year, the M4 MacBook Pro, Mac mini and iMac are the center of attention. We will now take a detailed look at what new features and designs these devices bring with them and what other models are planned for 2025.
The introduction of the M4 chip
The M4 chip was first introduced in the iPad Pro in May. Now the new Mac models are also set to benefit from its performance. The M4 chip is expected to make the computers not only faster but also more efficient. For the iMac, this may also mean an update of the accessories to USB-C, as Lightning accessories are still used up to now.
The M4 MacBook Pro
The M4 MacBook Pro is expected to be released this fall. Last year, the MacBook Pro received a new space black finish and a cheaper entry-level model. With the M4 update, Apple could once again raise the bar and make the laptop even more powerful. While a dramatic redesign is unlikely, small design adjustments and the integration of the M4 chip could make all the difference.
The Mac mini with M4 chip
Another highlight of this year is the Mac mini with the M4 chip. The Mac mini skipped the M3 chip series and was last updated in January 2023. With the new M4 chip, the Mac mini could get a significant performance boost. It will also be interesting to see whether Apple adapts the design, which has remained largely unchanged since 2010.
The iMac and its update
The 24-inch iMac received only minor updates last year, with accessories continuing to rely on Lightning. With the introduction of the M4 chip, Apple could transition the iMac to USB-C accessories, a logical step to improve usability and compatibility with other devices.
Future updates: MacBook Air, Mac Studio and Mac Pro
Mark Gurman according to The MacBook Air, Mac Studio and Mac Pro will not receive their M4 updates until 2025. These models have not seen any fundamental design changes for several years. The Mac Pro in particular could receive a dramatic redesign, as the current chassis is not optimally suited for Apple Silicon.
Dramatic changes to a Mac model
Gurman mentions that at least one Mac model will undergo dramatic changes. It remains to be seen which model that will be. The Mac Pro and Mac mini are the main candidates. A redesign of the MacBook Pro could also be on the cards in the next two years.
M4 chips: A new level of performance for Apple Macs
The introduction of the new M4 chips at Apple promises to take the performance of the Mac models to a new level. The M4 MacBook Pro, the Mac mini and the iMac will be in particular focus. With these updates, Apple is once again showing that innovation and increased performance are at the heart of its product development. Stay tuned for the upcoming innovations and look forward to an exciting time for all Apple fans. (Image: Apple)
