OpenAI is best known for ChatGPT – artificial intelligence that writes text, generates images, and answers questions. Now OpenAI could soon be taking a new direction. According to a recent report, the company is developing its own social network. There's already an internal prototype, and the idea behind it is clear: AI should help share better content.
Social networks haven't seen much fundamental change in recent years. Platforms like X (formerly Twitter), Instagram, and TikTok dominate the market. But precisely because the competition isn't necessarily becoming more innovative, now might be the right time for something new. OpenAI seems to have recognized this. The timing is no coincidence: ChatGPT was the most downloaded app worldwide last month – even ahead of TikTok and Instagram. This puts OpenAI in a strong position.
What exactly is OpenAI planning?
According to a report by The Verge, several teams at OpenAI are working on a social network that is similar to X in terms of functionality. The project is still in its early stages, but there is already a working prototype. The current internal status is heavily focused on image generation through ChatGPT. There will be a social feed similar to those seen on other networks. What exactly this feed will look like and what functions it will have are not yet clear. However, the focus is clearly on AI playing a central role in the creation and distribution of content. According to the report, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has already sought external feedback. He has apparently spoken to people outside the company about the project to gather their assessments and opinions.
Standalone app or extension of ChatGPT?
One point that hasn't been decided yet: Will the social network be released as a separate app or will it be integrated directly into ChatGPT? Both options are possible. ChatGPT itself is already extremely popular – and an integration would directly reach many users. On the other hand, a standalone app could help clearly separate the project from existing offerings and position it as something new. The Verge also points out that OpenAI is working on many different projects simultaneously. This means there's no guarantee that the social network will actually be released. It could also remain an internal experiment. But the mere fact that OpenAI is addressing the topic shows that the company is thinking beyond the current scope of ChatGPT.
AI at the center of the network
A key goal appears to be that artificial intelligence helps users create and share better content. This clearly distinguishes this network from previous platforms. It's not just about publishing posts, but about co-creating content with an AI. Similar approaches exist with Grok, the AI tool on X, but OpenAI could implement this idea more consistently and technically. A network built from the ground up around AI doesn't yet exist. OpenAI could therefore take on a pioneering role here—assuming the project is actually published (via The Verge).
Is something big coming? OpenAI's social media plans at a glance
OpenAI is working on its own social network. A lot is still unclear: whether the platform will be released separately or as part of ChatGPT, when it will be released—and if it will be released at all. What is clear, however, is that the company wants to explore the potential of AI in the social media space. If you're interested in technology, artificial intelligence, and new platforms, you should keep an eye on it.
