Updating the Mac Studio with an M2 Ultra may not happen soon, or at all, because of the Mac Pro.
After Apple launched the M2 Pro and M2 Max in January and improved the Mac mini, the Mac Studio is not necessarily being updated. With Apple desperate to launch a Mac Pro with Apple Silicon, it is suspected that the Mac Studio update with an M2 Ultra chip could be delayed or even canceled altogether. The new Mac Pro with Apple Silicon is expected to launch in the spring with the M2 Ultra chip. However, the prospect of two Macs with M2 Ultra could pose a problem for Apple, as one could cannibalize the other's sales.
New Mac Pro could be announced in spring
Mark Gurman writes in his “Power On” newsletter for Bloombergthat the Mac Pro has a similar feature set to the Mac Studio and therefore it would "make no sense" for Apple to offer an M2 Ultra Mac Studio and an M2 Ultra Mac Pro at the same time.
It's more likely that Apple will either never update the Mac Studio or wait until the M3 or M4 generation. Until then, Apple has the opportunity to better differentiate the Mac Studio from the Mac Pro.
The Mac Pro was originally supposed to be equipped with an "M2 Extreme" chip, which combines two M2 Ultra chips in one piece of silicon, but was canceled in December due to alleged production problems. (Image: Apple)
