If you're wondering whether it's worth buying a new iPad Pro or MacBook Pro, it's worth taking a look at Apple's plans for this year. According to well-connected Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, Apple will launch new versions of its iPad Pro and MacBook Pro models in 2025. The most significant difference from the current models will be the new M5 chip. No major changes to the design or features are expected. Find out what this means in concrete terms here.
Apple last introduced new iPad Pro models in May 2024. The devices featured some major innovations: OLED displays for the first time, a thinner and lighter chassis, the then-new M4 chip, and support for the Apple Pencil Pro. This made 2024 a real upgrade year for the iPad Pro. This year, however, looks like a much smaller update. M5 versions of the MacBook Pro are also planned, but without major changes. Therefore, anyone currently interested in new devices should keep a close eye on them.
iPad Pro 2025: Only the chip is new
According to Gurman, Apple has almost completed development of the new iPad Pro models with the M5 chip. The devices are already in an advanced testing phase. Mass production is scheduled to begin in the second half of 2025. If this schedule is met, the market launch could take place in October – as was the case with the 2018 and 2022 models. Apart from the new M5 chip, no other changes have been announced so far. This means: same displays, same casing, same features – just more power under the hood. Anyone who already owns a 2024 iPad Pro shouldn't notice much of a difference. While the M5 chip will be faster and more efficient, without any additional new hardware features, the update will primarily be of interest to users who need particularly high processing power and currently own an older device.
MacBook Pro with M5: No major update here either
In addition to the iPad Pro, the MacBook Pro will also receive an M5 upgrade. Gurman expects Apple to unveil the new models in 2025. However, the basic hardware will remain unchanged. According to previous rumors, Apple isn't planning a major redesign until 2026. That's when an OLED display and an even slimmer chassis are expected. So, if you're currently considering a MacBook Pro but don't urgently need one, it might be worth waiting for this major update. This year's M5 upgrade will primarily focus on increased performance and efficiency.
What the M5 chip should bring
Apple hasn't released any official details about the M5 chip yet, but based on what the M4 was already capable of, another performance leap is to be expected. You can expect the M5 to gain particularly in the areas of multitasking, graphics processing, and machine learning. This should have a noticeable impact on professional applications like video editing, 3D design, or large-scale data analysis. Those who primarily use their device for everyday tasks will notice less of a difference (via Bloomberg).
iPad Pro and MacBook Pro: M5 chip coming, design staying
Apple will launch new iPad Pro and MacBook Pro models with the M5 chip in 2025. The new devices are already in the final testing phase, with production expected to begin in the second half of the year. Release could be in October, as in previous years. No major design changes or new features are expected. If you already own a device from 2024, an upgrade probably isn't worth it. However, if you're looking for maximum performance or want to replace an older model, the M5 versions could be of interest. Everyone else could wait until 2026 to buy—that's when Apple will be releasing major updates. (Photo by Unsplash / Rameez Remy)
