We have often read rumors that Apple is working on new AirPods models. Now there is a report that makes the whole thing more concrete. A completely new HomePod model was also mentioned.
According to the news site Bloomberg, Apple plans to introduce the AirPods Pro 2 and AirPods 3 next year. The AirPods Studio and a completely new HomePod model could also be released. The report states:
The Cupertino, California-based tech giant is working on two new models: third-generation entry-level AirPods and the second version of the AirPods Pro earbuds. The models are expected to launch alongside other new Apple audio devices such as the HomePod and upcoming over-ear headphones.
AirPods Pro 2 to be more compact
By report confirmed previous rumors that the new third-generation AirPods will have a shorter stem and replaceable ear tips. That means they will be more in line with the current Pro version but will not have the premium features. However, Bloomberg said the company is looking to increase battery life. As for the second version of the AirPods Pro, Apple is looking to make the earbuds more compact by eliminating the short stem that currently protrudes from the bottom. It is claimed that Apple is testing a design with "a more rounded shape that fills the user's ear more." This would make the new version look similar to Samsung's Galaxy Buds and other competing products from Amazon and Google. According to the report, integrating the AirPods Pro features, antennas and microphones into the smaller case proved "challenging" during development, which "could lead to a less ambitious design when the product is finalized."
HomePod: There will be a third model
In addition to new plugs, another HomePod device is also said to be in the works.
In addition to the new AirPods, Apple has also internally developed a new HomePod that will sit between the original $299 HomePod and the $99 HomePod mini in size, price, and sound quality. It's unclear whether Apple will ultimately launch this product or just further reduce the price of the higher-end version.
Apple recently introduced the smaller HomePod mini for $99 / Euro, which takes on many of the features of the classic version and is intended to appeal to more price-conscious customers. We have not yet read any rumors about a third model. For this reason, it remains to be seen whether other sources will speak out in the coming weeks and months.

AirPods Studio: “Should have gone into production weeks ago”
Finally, Bloomberg also mentioned the long-awaited AirPods Studio and shed more light on the matter. According to the news site, Apple is still planning to announce the high-quality over-ear headphones. However, the product has faced several development challenges over the past two years, which led to multiple delays and a reduction in functionality. The interchangeable headband concept was also scrapped.
The headphones were supposed to go into production weeks ago but that was pushed back due to problems with the headband, said a person familiar with the matter. That part was found to be too tight in some tests.
The company originally wanted to include large touchpads on the sides of the headphones, but reduced the size of those panels. Apple has also reduced some of the headphones' interchangeable features, which were a hallmark of the original concept. The latest version of the product will likely not have a replaceable headband, but could still include replaceable ear pads.
It remains to be seen when Apple will actually introduce the brand new audio accessory. Leaker Jon Prosser has already claimed that Apple has postponed the launch to spring 2021. Even though Bloomberg has not provided any information on the launch date, Prosser could end up being right. (Photo by dominiquejames / Bigstockphoto)
