Apple will host its next virtual event on Monday evening and will most likely unveil brand new MacBook Pro models. These will feature a next-generation Apple Silicon chip. Now two new names have emerged.
The new MacBook Pros are powered by a new Apple Silicon processor that contains up to 10 CPU cores, eight of which are high-performance and two are energy-efficient. Apple is expected to offer two variants of its new graphics chip with 16 and 32 GPU cores. So far, there has been debate about whether Apple will launch this chip as "M1X" or "M2". Now, however, completely different names are coming into play - namely "M1 Pro" and "M1 Max".
New MacBook Pros: What will Apple call the new processor?
For example, Bloomberg journalist and Apple leaker Mark Gurman writes in the latest edition of his newsletter that a Mac developer informed him that the chip names “M1 Pro” and “M1 Max” have appeared in his app logs, along with the same screen resolutions for the upcoming MacBook Pros that were discovered in the macOS Monterey beta last month.
The developer mentioned told me that new MacBook Pro chips have been showing up in the logs under the names "M1 Pro" and "M1 Max." I'm not saying Apple will go that direction with its actual marketing names, but that's another - albeit more confusing - possibility. We'll know for sure in about 24 hours.
In the past, Apple has added an "X" and "Z" to its processors to identify improved versions of the base chip. For example, in the iPad Pro 2018, Apple called the chip "A12X," which is based on the A12 chip for the iPhone XS. We will find out what the new processor will actually be called by Monday evening at the latest.
