We first read reports in 2019 that Apple might integrate Touch ID under the display this year. In the meantime, rumors on the subject have increased.
Various sources claim that Apple could integrate Touch ID under the display for the first time this year. The feature is probably reserved for the Pro models. This means that users could choose between Face ID or Touch ID or even use both biometric authentication methods. Now the Wall Street Journal has published a new report. claimed Editor Joanna Stern believes that optical sensors that work with light or an ultrasound solution could be used.
Kuo gave first forecast in 2019
It is currently unknown which system Apple will ultimately choose. Both systems have their advantages and disadvantages. On the one hand, there is reliability and on the other hand, it is a question of cost. But according to Stern, the solution used by Apple will be at least as secure as the original version of Touch ID. This means that problems like those with Android phones are not to be expected. Interestingly, Ming-Chi Kuo predicted the return of Touch ID back in 2019. However, the analyst claimed that Touch ID under the display based on ultrasound technology developed by Qualcomm, among others, will return in 2021. However, there was no mention of optical sensors.
iPhone 2021: Devices could become more expensive
In the meantime, Bloomberg and reliable leaker L0vetodream have also confirmed something similar. However, they did not provide any details regarding the technology. Regardless of the technology used, the return of Touch ID would be a reason to celebrate. There are always situations in which Face ID cannot be used, such as with masks. The integration of both biometric authentication methods would offer users more flexibility. However, if Apple does decide to use ultrasound technology, it can be assumed that the devices will be more expensive, as this technology is more expensive than optical sensors.
