Rumors about the next iPhone generation have been documented for several months now. 120Hz displays are mentioned again and again. Now there is news.
Two of the four iPhone 2021 models – presumably the Pro devices – are expected to have OLED displays with energy-saving LTPO technology. This means that this technology would enable a refresh rate of 120 Hz. This is reported by the Korean website The Elec. According to the report, Samsung and LG Displays remain Apple's main suppliers for OLED panels, with Chinese manufacturer BOE also looking to secure some orders. The displays are said to be "technologically more sophisticated" to manufacture compared to the panels used in the iPhone 12 models. The LTPO technology would result in a power-saving backplane that is responsible for turning the individual pixels on and off on the display.
iPhone 2021 with always-on display?
This in turn could enable a refresh rate of 120 Hz, resulting in smoother scrolling, smoother motion, and improved responsiveness. Similar to the Apple Watch Series 5 and Series 6 models, LTPO could also enable an always-on display on the iPhone 2021 models and contribute to longer battery life. It was originally rumored that Apple would give the iPhone 12 Pro models 120 Hz panels. But display analyst Ross Young has always claimed that Apple requires LTPO technology for this step. iPad Pro models have supported a refresh rate of up to 120 Hz since 2017 through a feature called ProMotion, which automatically adjusts the refresh rate depending on the content. So the whole thing remains exciting as always. (Image: Apple)
