The start of the week was already full of rumors - but apparently there are more. Now a report has been published that says Touch ID 2.0 could be released next year.
Let's get straight to the point. According to two new Economic Daily News reports, Apple could introduce at least one iPhone with Face ID and Touch ID as early as next year. The fingerprint scanner will be based on ultrasound and integrated under the display. The news site claims to have learned that a meeting between senior Apple employees and the Taiwanese touchscreen manufacturer GIS is planned for next week. The meeting is to discuss the development of an iPhone with a fingerprint scanner under the display. According to both reports, the ultrasonic fingerprint sensor would come from Qualcomm and would be integrated into at least one iPhone model. In this case, the chip manufacturer would work with GIS and supply the necessary components. The claims could actually be true, as the reports correspond to previous statements by Bloomberg, Ming-Chi Kuo, Barclays analysts and other sources. They have predicted an iPhone with Face ID and Touch ID under the display for 2020 or 2021.
Two versions of fingerprint sensors under the display
Currently, two versions of under-display fingerprint sensors are known - optical and ultrasonic sensors. The optical sensors create a 2D image of a fingerprint because they are based on the light of the smartphone itself. The ultrasonic variants, on the other hand, work with a high-frequency sound that can create a 3D image of the fingerprint. Qualcomm already produces the necessary components for Samsung, as the Galaxy S10 and Galaxy Note 10 series use such ultrasonic fingerprint sensors. But Apple's version could be a more advanced variant of this technology - according to the news platform.
Secret briefing at the Mobile World Congress conference 2019
There is said to have been a secret briefing on this at the 2019 Mobile World Congress conference in Barcelona. According to reports, Qualcomm director Gordon Thomas emphasized that the company will produce "even larger fingerprint sensors" than those used by Samsung in its current range. This statement would therefore also fit with earlier reports that Apple is planning a fingerprint sensor under the display that covers the entire surface. Whether this is a coincidence or not is another matter. The fact is, however, that rumors are increasing that Apple is planning an iPhone with Face ID and Touch ID under the display. Whether the device will be released in 2020 or 2021 remains to be seen. Since a fingerprint sensor in the display requires an OLED panel, this feature will only be available on flagships.
