A major camera update is hinting at the iPhone 17 Pro. New leaks show cases for the upcoming Apple model, which are particularly notable for a striking, enlarged cutout for the camera bump. The basic design of the back also appears to be changing. This makes the iPhone 17 Pro's camera likely the most visible distinguishing feature compared to its predecessors.
When accessory manufacturers begin producing cases for new iPhones, they usually do so based on CAD files and exact measurements leaked from the supply chain. This is no different this time. Well-known leaker Sonny Dickson has published new photos showing cases for the iPhone 17 Pro. Particularly striking is the shape and size of the camera opening. This suggests fundamental design changes to the camera unit, which could be relevant not only visually but also technically.
New camera bump with revised layout
A redesign of the camera module is expected for the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max. The leaked cases show a wide camera cutout, the shape of which differs significantly from the current models. According to previous information, the new layout is said to be based on the design of the Google Pixel models, particularly the horizontal, runway-style arrangement. Despite the new look, the basic arrangement of the three camera lenses remains. They are still arranged in a triangle on the left side of the back. What is new, however, is that Apple is moving the LiDAR scanner, microphone, and flash to the right side. This creates a more symmetrical appearance (via X).
Possible reasons for the new camera design
Apple hasn't commented on the leaks, of course, but there are some plausible reasons for the design change:
- More space inside the case. Further shrinking the motherboard allows other components to be larger or placed more efficiently.
- Better sensor separation. This can lead to more accurate depth mapping, for example, for portrait mode or AR applications.
- Thermal efficiency. The restructuring could decouple heat-sensitive components from each other.
- Visually, the new design appears clearer and tidier thanks to its symmetrical layout.
Case color and uniform look
Another detail that caught my attention: The camera bump appears to be color-coordinated with the rest of the case. This suggests that Apple will be focusing on a more consistent design language in the future.
Release and other models
Apple is expected to unveil the iPhone 17 Pro in September—along with the iPhone 17, the iPhone 17 Pro Max, and a new model called the iPhone 17 Air. The latter is expected to be particularly thin and light. The usual mid-September launch date is also likely this time.
iPhone 17 Pro gets a visible camera upgrade
The iPhone 17 Pro will likely feature a significantly redesigned camera design, different from its predecessor both visually and functionally. The new sensor arrangement could offer advantages in depth sensing and heat dissipation, while the more uniform body design appears more modern. For you as a user, this means more technology, a new look—and potentially new features that come with the new camera module. (Image: @SonnyDickson / X)
