The iPhone 17 Pro is eagerly awaited, and new reports are providing more and more details about the possible improvements. The main focus is on the expansion of the memory to 12 GB RAM. With this, Apple is relying on better support for artificial intelligence and optimized performance. Analysts and industry experts confirm the rumors and predict that Apple wants to respond to the growing demand for AI functions with this change. But what does this mean specifically for users? And what other innovations can we expect?
Apple Intelligence was introduced at WWDC 2024 and marked a big step towards AI-supported features for iPhones. However, it quickly became apparent that powerful hardware is a prerequisite for these functions. The previous models that support Apple Intelligence have at least 8 GB of RAM. Now Apple seems to be raising the bar even further by equipping the iPhone 17 Pro and the Max model with 12 GB of RAM. This step is not surprising, as the demands on modern smartphones are constantly increasing. AI-supported applications in particular, but also multitasking and demanding apps benefit from more RAM. The analyst Ming-Chi Kuo had already August 2024 predicted a RAM increase for the Pro models of the next iPhone 2025 generation. Now Jeff Pu from GFHK Tech Research in a note to investors that Apple will equip the iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 17 Pro Max with 12GB of RAM.
Increasing memory: Why 12 GB RAM?
The decision to increase the RAM from 8 GB to 12 GB is closely linked to the further development of Apple Intelligence. AI functions require high computing power because they have to react to user input in real time. With this upgrade, Apple is sending a clear signal that future features will require even more powerful hardware. According to Jeff Pu, the switch to 12 GB LPDDR5 will not only improve performance, but will also impact the entire market. He expects that this upgrade alone will increase the average DRAM content in smartphones by 3.5% compared to the previous year, with an estimated 100 million new iPhones. Previous models already show a clear development:
- iPhone 15 Pro and 15 Pro Max: 8 GB RAM
- iPhone 16 and 16 Plus: 8 GB RAM
- iPhone 16e: 8 GB RAM
- iPhone 17 Pro and 17 Pro Max (expected): 12 GB RAM
The increase to 12 GB RAM is therefore a logical further development in order to meet the increasing demands.
Further innovations in the iPhone 17 Pro
In addition to the RAM, there are also reports of design changes to the entire iPhone 17 series. Apple is said to be working on a new camera layout that could be particularly interesting for vloggers. Improved video features could make the iPhone 17 Pro an even more attractive choice for content creators. Another rumor says that Apple is planning a new, particularly thin iPhone. This model is said to be positioned between the iPhone 17 and the iPhone 17 Pro and may replace the previous Plus model. The new iPhones are expected to be unveiled in September, as has been tradition in recent years.
iPhone 17 Pro: A future-proof upgrade
The increase in memory to 12 GB RAM on the iPhone 17 Pro shows that Apple is preparing for a future with even more powerful AI functions. The upgrade not only ensures better performance in current applications, but should also enable future software features that place higher demands on the hardware. In addition, design changes and new camera options could make the iPhone 17 Pro particularly attractive for content creators and demanding users. With the expected launch in September, it remains exciting to see what other details will be revealed by then. (Image: Apple)
