According to Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is actually working on satellite communications for the iPhone 14 and has completed hardware testing for the feature ahead of mass production.
The analyst says Apple has the hardware support for satellite connectivity, but whether the iPhone 14 will support satellite communications depends on "whether Apple and the operators can agree on a business model." The iPhone 13 also has satellite hardware but connectivity has not been implemented because "the business model has not yet been negotiated." Loud Kuo said it's "hard to predict" when the iPhone will officially offer satellite communications services, but it's expected to happen "at some point."
iPhone 14: Will Apple announce satellite communications?
When it is introduced, in the iPhone 14 or later, the satellite connection will be used for emergency calling and voice services. Bloomberg reports that iPhone users will be able to use the satellite connection to report emergencies to authorities in areas without cellular coverage and send short messages to contacts in case of emergency. There have been rumors that Apple is working with Globalstar. Based on Kuo's information, this does indeed seem to be the operator Apple is most likely to partner with. Satellite communications consultant Tim Ferrar said on Friday that he expects Apple and Globalstar to announce a satellite communications feature for the iPhone 14. Whether that will actually be the case, however, remains to be seen. We should have certainty by September 7th at the latest.
