The first rumors about the iPhone 14 series, which is expected in fall 2022, were documented a few months ago. Now there is a new report.
According to Korean website The Elec, the high-end models of the iPhone 14, i.e. the Pro versions, are expected to have a hole-punch display. The 6.1-inch iPhone 14 Pro and the 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Pro Max are expected to come with the improved display that replaces the notch. The notch allows Apple to create a larger display area while leaving room for the front camera. This design has been used by Android devices for several years. If Apple switches to this design, the Face ID hardware will have to be moved under the display. The two regular models, which will be 6.1 and 6.7 inches in size, are expected to continue to use a notch.
iPhone 14 series to forego mini model
This also means that Apple will discontinue the 5.4-inch "iPhone mini" in 2022 and instead offer four iPhones in 6.1- and 6.7-inch sizes. The Elec reportedthat Apple will continue to use LTPO OLED displays for the iPhone 14 Pro models to enable the 120Hz ProMotion refresh rate, a technology already found in the iPhone 13 Pro models.

Samsung supplied the OLED panels that Apple used for the iPhone 13 Pro models. But Apple may source some displays from LG Display in 2022. Rumors of a "hole-punch" display have already appeared several times. Well-known Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has repeatedly claimed that some iPhone 14 Pro models will likely feature this technology.
