We have documented enough rumors about the iPhone 14 Pro models in the last few days. Now there is a new report regarding the battery.
In his current “Power On” newsletter claimed Mark Gurman that the new iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max will have larger batteries and therefore the devices will appear a bit larger overall. The reason for this is the integration of the always-on display. The upcoming iPhone 14 Pro models, like the Apple Watch Series 5, are expected to have an always-on display later on, which will display important information and visual elements of the redesigned iOS 16 lock screen. The always-on display will show information such as the time, date and widgets and will also include tinted and darkened versions of some user-customized wallpapers. Of course, the feature will be optional, meaning users who do not want to use it can disable it. Thanks to the new OLED display technology, which has a lower refresh rate, Apple can offer an always-on display on the upcoming iPhones.
iPhone 14 Pro: Always-on display functionality remains exclusive
While the iPhone 13 Pro and iPhone 13 Pro Max support a variable refresh rate of up to 120Hz, the devices can only operate at up to 10Hz. The iPhone 14 Pro and iPhone 14 Pro Max's OLED panels are expected to have a refresh rate of just 1Hz to conserve battery life when constantly displaying static information. Due to the newer OLED display, the always-on display functionality is expected to remain exclusive to the iPhone 14 Pro, rather than being extended to the iPhone 13 Pro models through a potential software update as some have hoped. In addition to the power savings from the lower refresh rate, the iPhone 14 Pro's larger battery will likely offset any potential loss in battery life when users use the always-on display feature. These two changes come alongside improvements to the power efficiency of the upcoming A16 Bionic chip expected to power the new "Pro" iPhones.
