Rumors about future iPhone models accompany us almost daily. The iPhone 14 has been reported on several times. Now there are further details that also concern the iPhone 15, which is expected in 2023.
The reliable display analyst Ross Young according to Apple plans to replace the notch in some of the iPhone 14 models that will be released this year. The iPhone 14 Pro and 14 Pro Max are said to have a design with a pill-shaped notch that will house the Face ID elements and a second hole for the selfie camera. We've read this rumor several times before. But Young today reiterated his expectations for the iPhone 14 lineup and gave a preview of what's coming in the future. The combination of pill-shaped Face ID cutout and camera cutout will be about the same width as the notch, according to Young, but it will "certainly save some pixels above the holes."
iPhone 15 series could follow iPhone 14 Pro models
After introducing the new design in the iPhone 14 Pro models, Young believes that Apple will expand it to the entire iPhone 15 lineup in 2023, so that the cheaper iPhone 15 variants will also get the new look. According to Young, there is a possibility that the so-called pill and holes will be smaller in 2023 than in 2022 to allow for more space on the display. Citing leaks on the Chinese social network Weibo, Young speculates that the camera cutout in the iPhone 14 could be 5.631 mm, allowing for a reduction in size next year. While Apple plans to replace Face ID with an under-display Face ID that does not require a pill-shaped cutout for the hardware, this technology is not expected to be ready by the time the iPhone launches in 2023. Here's how the display analyst explains:
iPhone cutout will be with us for a while
However, we've heard from some sources that Face ID under the panel is unlikely to meet the 2023 mass production schedule. Part of this could have to do with coordination between the display and sensor teams. Of course, at least two of their suppliers would also need to be qualified to mass produce it. The companies we've spoken to don't expect a 2023 launch.
Whether Young will be right again remains to be seen, of course. However, since he has often been right in the past, there is currently no reason to doubt his statements.
