Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo predicts that the iPhone 14 Pro models will receive extensive camera upgrades that could lead to better low-light performance - but also a more expensive high-end line than the iPhone 13 Pro.
Kuos predictions included an improved ultra-wide-angle camera, increasing from a 1.0-micron pixel on the iPhone 13 Pro to a 1.4-micron pixel on the iPhone 14 Pro models. This improvement would improve low-light image capture, nearly doubling the amount of light captured per pixel. Overall, Kuo believes Apple will improve the iPhone 14 Pro's CMOS image sensor, voice coil motor, and compact camera module. Kuo points out that the three upgrades could be up to $70, $45, and $40 more expensive than the iPhone 13, respectively. This is not inconsistent with rumors of a 48-megapixel camera in the iPhone 14 Pro family. The camera is also expected to use pixel binning to improve color accuracy and low-light performance, using four individual pixels for each pixel produced in a low-light photo.
iPhone 14 Pro: A major camera upgrade is expected
The arrangement of four pixels equates to a size of 1.4 micrometers effectively used for a low-light pixel. If true, the result will still be 12-megapixel photos in low light and up to 48-megapixels in brightly lit subjects. The analyst also believes that suppliers will benefit from the upgrades. According to Kuo, Sony will supply the CMOS image sensor, Minebea and Largan will supply the voice coil motor, and LG Innotek will supply the compact camera module. Interestingly, Kuo stated before Apple's event announcement that he thinks the iPhone 14 could launch sooner than the iPhone 13, based on clues from Apple's last earnings call. He also predicts that Apple could announce its VR headset as early as January 2023, although it's not clear if this prediction is due to new information from the supply chain.
