The camera bump on the upcoming iPhone 14 Pro Max is expected to be the largest that Apple has ever installed in its flagship smartphones. A new image shows what it could look like in comparison to its predecessor.
All iPhone 14 models are expected to receive an upgrade to the ultra-wide-angle camera on the back of the device. But the iPhone 14 Pro models could receive further improvements to the main camera and updates to the telephoto lens. Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo expects the iPhone 14 Pro models to come with a 48-megapixel wide-angle camera, which would be a significant improvement over the current 12-megapixel lens, as well as 8K video recording capability. The new camera will also likely be capable of taking 12-megapixel shots - specifically, through what is known as pixel binning, which combines data from multiple smaller pixels on the camera's image sensor into a "superpixel" to improve light sensitivity.

As the image shows, this will force Apple to build the rear camera housing on the Pro models significantly higher. The image, which comes from Twitter user @lipilipsi and was created by Majin Bu divided shows the larger camera bump on an iPhone 14 Pro Max dummy compared to the rear camera system on the iPhone 13 Pro Max. According to schematics leaked in February, the camera bump on the iPhone 14 Pro Max will be 4.17mm thick, up from 3.60mm on the iPhone 13 Pro Max.
iPhone 14: Launch in September
The size of the camera bump is also expected to increase by about 5 percent in each direction: from 35.01 mm wide to 36.73 mm and from 36.24 mm high to 38.21 mm. Whether the enormous size of the camera housing is a worthwhile trade-off for the improved photo capabilities is something users will ultimately have to decide for themselves. But suffice it to say that cases designed for the iPhone 13 models will certainly not fit the iPhone 14 models due to the increase in size. After the iPhone 13 mini sold only moderately, Apple will focus on larger iPhones this year. Accordingly, Apple is expected to announce a 6.1-inch iPhone 14, a 6.1-inch iPhone 14 Pro, a 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Max and a 6.7-inch iPhone 14 Pro Max. (Image: Ian Zelebo x Jon Prosser)
