Apple is working on a major update for the iPad operating system. iPadOS 19 is expected to bring significantly more features to the tablet that are more familiar from Macs. According to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman, the focus is on improved multitasking, new window management, and overall more productive working with the iPad. The goal is to make the iPad feel "more like macOS" – without completely abandoning the typical features of the tablet.
For years, many iPad users have been clamoring for a system that makes better use of the powerful hardware, including software. The most common criticism, especially with the Pro models, was: plenty of power, but too little flexibility. Apple took a long time to respond. iPadOS 19 should finally make a noticeable difference—with features that are more closely aligned with the Mac experience. According to Gurman, it's part of a larger system overhaul that also includes a redesign of iOS 19 and macOS.
What iPadOS 19 brings: Overview of the planned innovations
New window management
One of the most important features in iPadOS 19 is a revised window management. Apps should be able to be opened and moved more freely in the future – similar to the Mac. Instead of fixed layouts like Split View or the limited Stage Manager, you should be able to flexibly position and resize app windows. This makes working with multiple applications simultaneously much easier (via Bloomberg).
More multitasking features
Multitasking will also be expanded. You'll likely be able to switch between apps more quickly, complete tasks in parallel, and customize the user interface more to your needs. This makes the iPad particularly attractive for users who regularly use the device for work and have previously encountered system-related limitations.
Focus on productivity
With iPadOS 19, Apple aims to further close the gap between tablet and desktop. While it's not a Mac version for the iPad, the system is moving in a significantly more professional direction. Users with a keyboard and mouse should particularly benefit from the new features. The combination of mobile hardware and flexible software is intended to make the iPad a true laptop alternative.
Part of a larger upheaval at Apple
iPadOS 19 isn't the only system receiving a major update in 2025. According to Gurman, Apple is also planning a design overhaul for iOS 19 on the iPhone and macOS on the Mac—the latter for the first time in five years. All systems are expected to become more modern, consistent, and powerful. This demonstrates that Apple isn't just adapting individual features, but is redesigning its platforms as a whole.
Not macOS – but much closer
Gurman makes it clear that iPadOS 19 won't be a full macOS on the tablet. Some limitations remain in terms of usability and functionality. Nevertheless, he says it's a long overdue step in the right direction. Many users would have wanted this kind of update years ago.
iPadOS 19 could change the iPad noticeably
If you use your iPad for more than just browsing or media, iPadOS 19 will be exciting for you. The update aims to eliminate many of the previous limitations and make the tablet more flexible, efficient, and productive. Apple is clearly taking cues from the Mac without completely redesigning the iPad. This could be a real step forward for power users, creatives, and anyone who works on the go.
