Every year, Apple releases a new iOS update—and every year the same question arises: Will my iPhone still be supported? Rumors about compatibility with iOS 19, which will be released in June 2025, are already circulating. A recent report is stirring up the discussion. Three iPhones that were previously supported will no longer be supported with iOS 19. Find out exactly what's behind it and how credible the whole thing is here.
In June 2025, Apple will officially unveil iOS 19 at WWDC. The new version will bring numerous new features—but not every iPhone will receive the update. An anonymous but historically reliable account on X (formerly Twitter) has published new compatibility information. According to the report, iOS 19 will end support for three popular iPhone models: the iPhone XR, the iPhone XS, and the iPhone XS Max. All three devices date back to 2018. If you're using one of these models, iOS 18 could be the last major update for your device.
These iPhones are no longer compatible with iOS 19
According to the leaker, the end of support affects the following models:
- iPhone XR
- iPhone XS
- iPhone XS Max
This information comes from an anonymous leaker who has often reported accurately on Apple software in the past. For example, he correctly published the iOS 18 compatibility list last year. Therefore, his new assessment is being taken seriously in the community. The three affected models were all released in September 2018 and are therefore among the older devices that currently still support iOS 18.
These iPhones are expected to receive iOS 19
If the rumor is true, iOS 19 will run on the following iPhones:
- iPhone 11
- iPhone 11 Pro
- iPhone 11 Pro Max
- iPhone 12
- iPhone 12 mini
- iPhone 12 Pro
- iPhone 12 Pro Max
- iPhone 13
- iPhone 13 mini
- iPhone 13 Pro
- iPhone 13 Pro Max
- iPhone 14
- iPhone 14 Plus
- iPhone 14 Pro
- iPhone 14 Pro Max
- iPhone 15
- iPhone 15 Plus
- iPhone 15 Pro
- iPhone 15 Pro Max
- iPhone 16e
- iPhone 16
- iPhone 16 Plus
- iPhone 16 Pro
- iPhone 16 Pro Max
- iPhone SE (2nd generation)
- iPhone SE (3rd generation)
If you use one of these models, you can pretty much assume that you will also get iOS 19.
iPadOS 19: An iPad is also to be dropped
It's not just the iPhone that's seeing changes. According to the same leak, iPadOS 19 will end support for the 7th-generation iPad. This iPad was released in September 2019 and features the A10 Fusion chip. So, this is also a device that's already several years old.
What should we make of the leak?
Interestingly, there is conflicting information. In December, the French website iPhoneSoft reported that all iPhones supporting iOS 18 would also receive iOS 19. Both sources are considered reliable. However, iPhoneSoft has been wrong in the past – for example, with iOS 15, when they falsely claimed that the iPhone 6s and the first iPhone SE would no longer receive an update. These devices were only removed from support a year later with iOS 16. The new leak is therefore unconfirmed, but realistic. Apple itself traditionally only comments on compatibility at WWDC, i.e. in June.
What does this mean for you?
If you're using an iPhone XR, XS, or XS Max, you should expect iOS 19 to be discontinued. This doesn't mean your device is immediately obsolete, as Apple continues to provide security updates for older versions. For example, Apple recently released iOS 16.7.11—with security updates for older devices like the iPhone 8 or iPhone X. So, an upgrade isn't absolutely necessary, but if you value new features, you should keep an eye on the situation. Especially if you've been thinking about upgrading to a newer iPhone for a few years.
iOS 19 likely brings the end for certain iPhones
iOS 19 is just around the corner and may not support all older devices. According to current information, the iPhone XR, iPhone XS, and iPhone XS Max could be left out. This hasn't been confirmed yet, but the source is considered credible. Those with a supported model can look forward to new features. Those with an older device should consider whether upgrading makes sense. We'll know more in June, when Apple officially announces all the details at WWDC25. Until then, wait and see—and be prepared.
