Apple always makes headlines with its iOS updates and iOS 19 is no exception. The rumor mill is already running hot, although the official announcement is not expected until June 2025. Particularly exciting: A significantly improved Siri, which is based on artificial intelligence and is said to be similar to ChatGPT.
When it comes to operating systems, Apple has been setting standards for years. iOS 19 could be the next big development - especially in the area of artificial intelligence. It seems as if Apple wants to push the boundaries of its voice assistant Siri and at the same time strengthen its position as an innovative market leader. But alongside the exciting innovations, there are also delays that are causing discussion.
Siri is getting smarter and more like ChatGPT
One of the most important new features to come with iOS 19 is a significantly improved Siri. According to a report by Mark Gurman, Siri will be based on a completely new technology: advanced language models that work similarly to ChatGPT from OpenAI. The goal is to make Siri much more conversational and give her the ability to handle complex and sophisticated requests. This could mean that Siri will be able to do a lot more in the future, for example:
- Schedule detailed tasks such as booking flights, hotels and restaurants in a single request.
- Provide in-depth information, such as scientific explanations or personal recommendations.
- Seamless control of apps, including third-party ones, with specific commands.
However, this feature will not be available immediately with iOS 19. According to Gurman, Apple plans to release the new Siri in spring 2026 as part of the iOS 19.4 update. This means that we will have to wait about a year and a half until the feature can be used to its full extent.
Additional features postponed
In addition to the improved Siri, Gurman says there are other planned features that will also only be released with iOS 19.4. Details are not yet known, but it is suspected that Apple is deliberately postponing these functions to ensure that they are perfectly developed. Possible features could be:
- New privacy tools to protect your data even better.
- Improved integration with AR technology, especially in conjunction with Vision Pro.
- Extensions for widgets or app interactions that increase usability.
It is typical for Apple to roll out updates in stages to ensure high stability and quality.
iOS 18 as a transition to iOS 19
Before iOS 19 arrives, iOS 18 already has some interesting new features that will pave the way. For example, iOS 18.2 will be released in December 2024, which will enable rudimentary integration of ChatGPT into Siri for the first time. Later, with iOS 18.4, Google's AI model Gemini will also be integrated into Siri. However, these functions are still limited and do not offer full ChatGPT-like capabilities. For Apple, this is a crucial intermediate step to gain experience with AI integration and eliminate any weaknesses before the big iOS 19 launch.
Less dependence on third parties
An interesting perspective: With the improved Siri, Apple could significantly reduce the need for third-party tools such as ChatGPT or Gemini. Once iOS 19.4 is available, you should be able to perform many tasks directly through Siri without having to rely on additional apps. This would not only save time but also better protect your data, as everything remains within the Apple ecosystem.
The future of Siri and iOS 19 in focus
iOS 19 will undoubtedly be a milestone, especially with the introduction of a much more advanced Siri. Even though full functionality will not be available until iOS 19.4 in spring 2026, the direction is clear: Apple wants to take its artificial intelligence to a new level. The delay of further features shows that Apple is taking its time to deliver quality - a strategy that has already proven successful in the past. Until then, iOS 18 with its AI features will serve as a temporary solution. Expectations for iOS 19 are high, and if the rumors are true, this update could be one of the most exciting in the history of the operating system. It only remains to be seen how Apple ultimately implements these plans. (Photo by Unsplash / Amanz)
