Apple plans to launch the first MacBook with an OLED display in late 2024 at the earliest, an analyst now claims.
In a series of tweets Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo said today that OLED technology would enable thinner and lighter MacBook designs. All current MacBooks rely on LCD panels, with the latest 14- and 16-inch MacBook Pro units featuring mini-LED backlighting and ProMotion. Unlike LCDs with mini-LEDs, OLED displays have self-illuminating pixels and do not require a backlight, which would give MacBooks an even better contrast ratio and enable longer battery life.
First MacBook with OLED display could be an Air model
Kuo did not say whether the OLED MacBook will be a Pro or Air model. However, last month, analyst Ross Young said that Apple plans to launch a new 13-inch MacBook Air with an OLED display in 2024. He also expects Apple to launch new 11.1-inch and 13-inch iPad Pro models with OLED displays next year. While it looks like Macs and iPads will be moving to OLED displays over the next few years, the Apple Watch could move away from the technology. Bloomberg's Mark Gurman recently reported that a new Apple Watch Ultra with a microLED display could launch by the end of 2024. The microLED technology would offer even higher brightness and better contrast ratio compared to the existing Apple Watch models with OLED displays. (Image: Apple)
