Rumors about at least one Apple mixed reality headset have been circulating for years. Now it is claimed that it will finally happen in 2022.
According to reports, Apple is working on glasses and headsets designed for augmented reality. If you believe various sources, Apple first wants to present a mixed reality headset that can handle both augmented and virtual reality. Now claimed Mark Gurman predicts in his latest newsletter “Power On” that Apple will introduce a mixed reality headset in 2022.
Apple plans to launch its own expensive device with advanced chips, displays, sensors and avatar-based features as early as next year.
Earlier this year, a report stated that this new mixed reality headset could cost at least $3,000, which confirms Gurman's statement that this device will be expensive. With Apple already wowing its users with the new M1 Pro and M1 Max chips, it's only a matter of time before the company can combine all these parts together.
Apple Mixed Reality Headset: Gaming on a New Level?
In the new newsletter issue, Gurman also discusses the use cases, including gaming. Because even though the new Macs have one of the most powerful chips ever, macOS is not a great gaming platform and even though Apple Arcade is adding more and more games, Apple itself cannot yet keep up with Sony, Microsoft or Nintendo. Gurman says that this headset will have "both AR and VR capabilities" and that Apple is aiming for a "mixed reality experience that enables gaming in high-quality virtual reality". He writes:
Apple's first headset will be a mixed reality headset. That means it will have both AR and VR capabilities. While games can be played in both environments, virtual reality is what you need for truly powerful games with top-notch graphics. That's exactly what Apple's first headset aims to achieve: a mixed reality experience that uses fast chips and high-end displays to enable high-quality virtual reality gaming.
