Back in the spring, it was reported that Apple was investing in the development of its own Micro LED displays. Now it seems as if the switch from OLED to Micro LED is becoming a reality.
According to the Taiwanese Economic Daily News, several representatives of the iGroup at the “Touch Taiwan“Convention for display technologies visited the display manufacturer AU Optronics.
There were also meetings with Epistar - both specialists in mini and micro LED screens. Apple is likely to be the first to make the switch to micro LED displays with the Apple Watch. Suitable panels are already available for this. A transition for the iPhone and iPad is not yet possible, as the current screens have too low a resolution.
What are Micro LED displays?
Micro LED displays have a higher contrast and black level compared to LCD screens. They also generally have a much faster response time and the efficiency of luminous flux per power is higher. They are considered the successor to OLED technology.
