A new Apple Watch Ultra with a larger 2.1-inch display is expected to launch in 2024, Taiwanese publication DigiTimes reported today, citing industry sources. This is consistent with information shared last month by Jeff Pu, technology analyst at Hong Kong investment firm Haitong International Securities.
The current Apple Watch Ultra has a screen of 1.93 inches. The Model So, the 2024 would have a display that is almost 10 % larger and would likely be the first Apple Watch with a case size of over 50mm. In addition, the new Ultra is expected to be the first Apple Watch to feature microLED display technology, which offers higher brightness, lower power consumption and a better contrast ratio compared to current models with OLED displays.
microLED displays: Apple Watch Ultra could form the foundation
Whether an update to the Apple Watch Ultra is planned for 2023 remains unclear. Taiwanese market research firm TrendForce reported today that microLED technology could allow Apple to offer products with "groundbreaking product innovations" in the future, ranging from foldable and rollable iPhone models to fully transparent AR glasses. The production costs for microLED displays are currently still high, so Apple's move to this technology will likely take many years. In the meantime, Apple is converting its entire product range to OLED displays. The first Apple device with an OLED display was the Apple Watch in 2015, while the iPhone has used OLED since 2017. Rumors suggest that the first MacBook Air and iPad Pro models with OLED displays will launch in 2024. (Photo by hadrian / Bigstockphoto)
