It is an open secret that Apple is interested in Intel's modem division. Talks have been going on for some time - now they seem to be entering the final stages - according to a new report.
Apple wants to establish itself in the modem business and become more independent of Qualcomm. Intel's patents would make this process much easier. The Wall Street Journal is now reporting that both companies are close to reaching an agreement - the deal could be completed as early as next week. The WSJ writes that Cupertino wants to pay around one billion US dollars to be able to take over Intel's entire modem division - in addition to the patents, this would also include the employees and associated locations.
5G modem expected in 2020
It is emphasized that this takeover would save Apple years of development work on its own modem technology. If the deal goes through, it would offer many advantages. According to current rumors, Apple is very likely planning to present the iPhone with a 5G modem in 2020. The chip is said to come from Qualcomm. Analysts believe that the device could be a sales hit. (Photo by Unsplash)
