In just over two months, Apple will introduce the new iPhone generation – according to some rumors and leaks, the iPhone 2019 will get a camera update. But it won't stop there.
According to a new report from Digitimes, Apple is reportedly planning to update the iPhone camera again in 2020. The so-called Time-of-Flight technology is to be used. According to this, it is a 3D camera. This technology is similar in principle to the infrared TrueDepth camera system that can be found on the front of the iPhone today and enables facial recognition. Adding a 3D sensor system to the rear camera would make detailed 3D photo capture possible. This would also open up new augmented reality possibilities. The rumor is not new - there have already been several reports in recent months that also predict a 3D camera next year. Among the sources was a note from the well-known analyst Ming-Chi Kuo. According to him, Apple would first give such a 3D system to the iPad Pro and then to the iPhone.
time-of-flight
The 3D camera uses the Time-of-Flight (TOF) method and allows better images. The sensor calculates the time it takes for light to reach a surface - it can therefore determine depth information and thus create more precise images. The ToF system on the back of the iPhone would not be identical to the TrueDepth camera we know today, as the front module cannot work with greater distances. A triple camera is planned for the 2019 iPhone - the third lens is said to function as an ultra-wide-angle lens. This would enable a larger optical zoom. At the same time, the Face ID hardware is to be slightly improved - but it will retain the familiar design.
