Apple is working on a major update for the Health app. Plans call for a digital health coach that will use artificial intelligence to analyze your health data and provide you with personalized tips. The app will be able to do more than before—not just collect data, but also actively help you live a healthier life. Apple also plans to offer more support in nutrition, fitness, and mental health in the future.
The Apple Health app currently serves as a central repository for health and fitness data. It draws on information from the Apple Watch and internal sensors, among other things, and shows you trends or changes. However, its features are limited. This is precisely where Apple is coming in: In the future, the app will take on an active role and provide you with targeted recommendations – supported by artificial intelligence and medical expertise.
Project Mulberry: Apple's new health strategy
According to a report by Mark Gurman (Bloomberg), Apple is working internally on a project called "Project Mulberry." The project involves developing an AI-based health coach. This digital assistant will continuously analyze your data and tell you what you can specifically do to improve your health—similar to medical coaching. Apple is training the AI using data from its own doctors. The company is also collaborating with external specialists in the fields of sleep, nutrition, physical therapy, mental health, and cardiology. These experts will also produce video content to inform you about health topics. The filming will take place in a new Apple studio near Oakland, California.
Health+ and prominent support
Apple is apparently planning a supplementary offering called "Health+." A well-known medical personality is being sought to host this format. Details aren't available yet, but it suggests a comprehensive coaching and information offering that goes beyond the current app.
New features: Focus on nutrition and exercise
In addition to the AI coach, Cupertino is planning a revised food tracking feature. Until now, the app's nutrition function has been quite limited. This is set to change. The report doesn't provide any concrete details, but Apple could compete directly with existing apps like MyFitnessPal with this innovation. Apple also wants to break new ground in the area of fitness. The plan is for the rear cameras of your iPhone or iPad to film your workout. The AI coach will analyze your movements and give you feedback on how you can improve. This feature would go beyond the current capabilities of Fitness+ workouts, which rely on the Apple Watch. It is conceivable that the camera analysis will be integrated directly into the Fitness+ platform (via Bloomberg).
Long-term goal: more than just hardware
Apple has been working on health solutions for some time. Previous projects like "Project Quartz" also focused on AI coaching. The development of non-invasive sensors for blood glucose and blood pressure measurement for the Apple Watch has also been underway for years, but has repeatedly been slowed by technical hurdles. The new AI assistant could therefore be a shorter-term solution to further expand Apple's health features – without having to wait for new hardware.
The Health app becomes a digital health advisor
If all goes according to plan, the new AI Coach could be introduced as early as iOS 19.4 – in about a year. Until then, Apple will continue working on integrating medical knowledge, intelligent analysis, and practical coaching. The goal is to provide you with not just information, but real support. The Health app will thus evolve from a passive data display to an active companion for your health. (Image: Apple)
