Apple appears to be planning to change the format for serial numbers on future devices. This is evident from an internal document.
The colleagues from MacRumors report on a document that Apple is said to have made available to its authorized service partners in the USA. It shows that the company is planning to change the serial numbers. This means that the format of the serial numbers will be redesigned at the end of 2020. Accordingly, future products will receive a serial number made up of a random alphanumeric character string. It is emphasized that existing serial numbers will remain unaffected by the change.
Change prevents further cases of fraud
Although Apple already uses alphanumeric serial numbers, both the date and the place of manufacture can be guessed based on the current format. A new sequence of characters based on randomness should therefore prevent further cases of fraud - at least it would make the serial number much more difficult to decipher. However, it is unknown when exactly the change will come into effect and whether it will actually apply worldwide. (Photo by hadrian / Bigstockphoto)
