Rumors that Apple is developing various hardware products are documented almost regularly. From new iPhones, iPads to Mac devices and much more. But is Cupertino also working on its own games console?
According to an article in a Korean forum, which was shared by Twitter user @FrontTron According to a report shared by Apple, Apple is developing a portable hybrid gaming console, comparable to the Nintendo Switch. Although the source of the rumor is unknown, the statement has gained some attention in major news outlets in recent days. The device will apparently feature an all-new application processor designed by Apple, foregoing an A- or M-series chip. This chip appears to be specifically designed for gaming and is said to offer increased GPU performance and improved ray tracing.
Apple & Gaming: There were already rumors
Apple is reportedly currently in talks with a number of well-known video game studios, including Ubisoft, the maker of popular titles such as "Assassin's Creed," "Far Cry," and "Watch Dogs," to develop games for the new device. It is unknown where this console would be positioned between devices such as the iPad and the Apple TV, both of which offer integration with Apple Arcade and support for a variety of external controllers. Late last year, Bloomberg claimed that Apple is working on a new Apple TV model with a stronger gaming focus. Also, the leaker known as "Fudge" stated that Apple is developing a gaming-focused Apple TV with an A14X chip.
Is Apple planning to re-enter the console market?
Apple launched its own gaming console in 1996, the Apple Bandai Pippin, but it was largely unsuccessful and was discontinued after Steve Jobs returned to the company. Rumors of the company re-entering the console market have been circulating ever since, but have never come to fruition. The reliable leaker known as "L0vetodream" said last year that Apple is working on its own gaming controller, and after a flood of rumors about a gaming-focused Apple TV product, it's not entirely out of the question that Apple is working on some kind of gaming console. Still, this rumor should be viewed with particular skepticism, as there is no concrete evidence to support it so far. (Photo by Wladimir.B / Bigstockphot)
