Samsung Display is developing a 13.3-inch OLED panel for a future MacBook Air and plans to convert several Apple product lines to this display technology, The Elec reports.
LG Display is reportedly developing OLED displays for both the next-generation iPad Pro's 11- and 13-inch models and lacks sufficient production capacity for the MacBook Air, so Apple has chosen Samsung. Samsung Display is also reportedly developing an 11-inch OLED panel for a future iPad model set to launch next year, suggesting the company could take some of LG's 11-inch iPad Pro orders. Apple is apparently planning to launch new iPad Pro, MacBook Pro and MacBook Air models with OLED displays one after the other. The Elec is unsure when the OLED MacBook Air will launch, suspected but that it could take about two years due to Apple's product development schedule.
MacBook Air with OLED display may still be a long time coming
Display analyst Ross Young has previously said that he doesn't expect a MacBook Air with an OLED display until 2024. It is believed that Apple originally wanted to supply a 10.86-inch OLED panel from Samsung Display for a future iPad Air model, which would have been its first OLED iPad, before the project was abandoned due to pricing and volume issues of the single-stack panel, as well as concerns about the need to differentiate the iPad Air from the iPad Pro. Apple has now reportedly opted for a more reliable dual-stack OLED panel, which it plans to introduce for the iPad Pro next year. The Elec also claims that the project to develop a 13.3-inch OLED screen for the MacBook Air is also a test run for mass production of OLED screens for future MacBook Pro models. (Image: Apple)
