Apple will be introducing a number of new products this year, but one of the most exciting devices, the so-called HomePad, is still waiting. The launch was originally planned for March, but according to Bloomberg journalist Mark Gurman, the smart home product will not be released for several months. The delay is apparently related to software updates that are not yet ready. The HomePad could still play a central role in Apple's smart home strategy, especially in conjunction with iOS 18.4 and new AI features.
In recent years, Apple has repeatedly shown its interest in smart home technologies, for example with the HomePod and HomeKit. With the HomePad, the company is now planning a device that will serve as a central control element for the networked home. The close integration with the new iOS version and the further development of Siri is particularly exciting. But Apple users will have to be patient before the HomePad is released. According to Gurman, the original schedule for March is no longer realistic. It is now unclear whether the device will be released in April or later.
Why is the HomePad lagging?
In November 2024, Mark Gurman first reported on Apple's plans for the HomePad, predicting a March 2025 launch. In January, however, he stated that the device could be delayed because some features rely on future software updates. In his current Power-On newsletter, Gurman now writes that the HomePad is "still months away from shipping." This statement confirms two things. First, a March release is off the table. Second, even if April is still a possibility, Gurman seems to be expecting a longer delay. One reason for this could be the new AI features in iOS 18.4. With the upcoming update, Apple is introducing more powerful Siri features that could be central to the HomePad. Since iOS 18.4 is expected to be released in April, a release of the HomePad at that time would be an obvious choice. Nevertheless, it remains to be seen whether Apple will really bring the device to market so early.
What is known about the HomePad?
The HomePad is intended to represent a new product category for Apple. While the HomePod was primarily designed as a smart speaker, the HomePad is intended to serve as a central hub for smart home devices.
- The HomePad is expected to be closely compatible with Apple's HomeKit system and possibly also with the new smart home standard Matter.
- A special focus is on the improved Siri integration, which is set to become more powerful and intelligent with iOS 18.4.
- It is still unclear whether the HomePad will have a display or touchscreen. Reports suggest that Apple is planning a device that could compete with Amazon's Echo Show and Google's Nest Hub.
- The hardware is expected to be high-quality, possibly with powerful speakers and microphones for precise voice control.
Apple continues to optimize: HomePad is taking its time
Those waiting for the HomePad will have to be patient. The device could be released in April, but a later release is also possible. Apple continues to work on smart home technologies and the HomePad could be an important part of this strategy. The delay shows that Apple is keen to bring a mature product to market. If the extra months are used to perfectly coordinate hardware and software, the HomePad could be a significant step for Apple's smart home ecosystem. Until then, it remains to be seen when Apple officially unveils the brand new product. (Image: Apple)
