Apple has been working on new innovations in the wearables sector for years. After the rather cautious reception of the Apple Vision Pro, the company is now thinking about a lighter and more mass-market solution. Smart glasses, often referred to as Apple Glasses, could be the next big project. But so far there has been no official announcement - only reports of internal tests and concepts. While the development of such glasses presents enormous challenges, Apple is sticking with it. The goal is a solution suitable for everyday use that is not only technically convincing but also comfortable to wear. Current information suggests that it will be years before a finished version comes onto the market.
Apple has already achieved great success with its wearables. The Apple Watch and AirPods are now integral parts of the product portfolio and dominate their markets. But smart glasses are a much greater challenge. The first attempt, the Apple Vision Pro, was celebrated as a milestone in technology, but did not prove to be a commercial success. The combination of high price, heavy design and limited usage options made the device unattractive to many. Apple is now working on a new strategy. Internally, there are various concepts, including AR glasses that project information directly into the field of vision, as well as rather simple smart glasses without AR functions that are equipped with cameras, microphones and AI technologies. But both variants face massive technical hurdles.
Apple Glasses: A possible future project
What Apple has tried so far
According to reports, Apple has been testing various formats in recent years. One of the projects that was discarded was AR glasses that would serve as an external display for the Mac. This idea was stopped in 2025 because it apparently did not offer the desired added value. Now Apple is thinking again about standalone AR glasses. The concept is to develop lightweight glasses that integrate seamlessly into everyday life. But there are numerous problems to be solved - both in terms of design and technology (via Bloomberg).
challenges in development
Building smart glasses in a format suitable for everyday use is extremely difficult. Apple has to overcome several hurdles:
- Weight and ergonomics: Glasses must not be heavy or bulky, otherwise they will not be used in everyday life.
- Battery life: Long battery life is crucial, but powerful hardware requires a lot of energy.
- Image quality and lenses: AR technology must be razor-sharp, but must not cause distortion or blurring.
- Processor and software: Smart glasses must be powerful but at the same time energy-efficient.
Apple is already testing various prototypes internally. There are reports of secret laboratories working on a solution. But even for many Apple employees, the project remains under wraps.
An alternative: Smart glasses without AR functions
Another concept that Apple is currently considering is smart glasses without augmented reality. These could work similarly to the Ray-Ban Meta and include features such as cameras, microphones, AI-powered assistants and audio technology. Additionally, there are reports of experiments with AirPods with built-in cameras that could be used for AI functions. Such technologies could also be used in the long term for glasses that are linked to Apple products such as the iPhone or Mac.
When could Apple Glasses be released?
According to current estimates, it will take years for Apple to develop a market-ready version of its smart glasses. Forecasts range from three to five years, which would mean a release in 2028 at the earliest or even 2030. Apple continues to invest billions in research and development. But there is no guarantee that the company will ever bring AR glasses to market that are suitable for mass use. It could also be that the concept will be abandoned or significantly changed at some point.

The big question: Will Apple make AR glasses suitable for mass use?
The idea of Apple Smart Glasses is fascinating, but the technical hurdles are enormous. While Apple has already taken its first steps towards mixed reality with the Vision Pro, glasses suitable for everyday use are a whole different level. It remains unclear whether and when Apple will release such glasses. What is clear, however, is that the company is working intensively on new solutions for wearables. The next few years will show whether Apple can really start a smart glasses revolution - or whether it will remain an interesting but unrealistic concept. (Photo by Unsplash+ / Alex Shuper)
