Apple plans to launch its augmented reality glasses “Apple Glasses” in 2026 or 2027 at the earliest. This delay is related to the development of the new Metalens technology.
According to Apple industry analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple is expected to use this technology useto replace plastic lens covers in various devices. The Metalens technology uses metasurfaces to focus light, offering advantages such as a flat surface and reduced thickness compared to traditional curved refractive lenses. Kuo predicts that the Metalens cover layers will gradually replace plastic lenses in various applications between 2024 and 2030. Although Kuo had predicted an earlier timeline for the launch of Apple Glasses in the past, he now says that it will not be possible to bring the AR glasses to market until 2026 or 2027 at the earliest, as the Metalens technology still needs to be developed.
Metalens: The future of lens technology for Apple Glasses
The technology is expected to be used first in Apple's Face ID system for the iPad Pro and in 2025 or 2026 for the iPhone, and will eventually be used in Apple's AR glasses. Investors should be aware that Metalens will gradually replace existing plastic lenses in various applications in the coming years. Apple may have difficulties launching its AR glasses, Apple Glasses. But Metalens technology will still find a pioneering application in other devices. It remains to be seen how the technology will develop in the coming years and how this will affect the future of Apple and the technology industry. (Photo by peshkov / Bigstockphoto)
