Rumors about the alleged Apple Car have been piling up in recent weeks. Now there is more to come.
Rumors surrounding the Apple Car have increased somewhat surprisingly in recent weeks. Now The Verge has published a report published, according to which Apple is said to have held talks with Canoo last year. The company is a startup that focuses on electric vehicles and related technologies. According to the report, both companies discussed possible investments - a takeover by Apple was also said to have been discussed. The Verge claims to have learned that Apple is very interested in Canoo's scalable electric vehicle platform, which it calls the "skateboard". It consists of integrating more electronics into the car using steer-by-wire technology, which allows greater flexibility in the design of the interior. Apple wanted to take over Canoo - but the startup was only interested in collaborating with the Cupertino-based company.
Apple Car: Ready for market in five to seven years at the earliest
Both companies stopped negotiations after Canoo went public on the NASDAQ stock exchange in December. Tony Aquila, Executive Chairman of Canoo, declined to discuss the startup's strategies and negotiations in a statement to The Verge, as did Apple. Interestingly, Hyundai has previously worked with Canoo. The company confirmed even talks with Apple. While the acquisition of Canoo did not happen, Apple bought Drive.ai in 2019 - a startup that develops autonomous cars. Cupertino did not discuss the reasons for the acquisition but the company confirmed that Drive.ai engineers would work on the development and product design. If Ming-Chi Kuo and Bloomberg are to be believed, the Apple Car will not appear before 2027 / 2028. So the whole thing should remain exciting in the next few years. (Image: Canoo)
