Apple is actively working on the next generation of its popular tracking device - the AirTag 2. According to information from Mark Gurman, a renowned journalist at Bloomberg, the new model is expected to be released "in the middle of next year". Although the basic design is expected to remain largely unchanged, there will be crucial improvements in three areas: range, wireless technology and data protection.
The AirTags were a success when they were introduced in 2021. They quickly established themselves as reliable helpers when it came to finding lost items. But as with any new product, there were also weak points. Data protection in particular became increasingly the focus of attention after some AirTags were used for unwanted tracking. Apple is now addressing this criticism and is planning an improved model that will impress in terms of technology and security.
Design remains the same – improvements in detail
First the good news: The slim and compact design of the AirTag remains consistSo you can assume that the AirTag 2 will be just as handy and easy to use as the current version. Nevertheless, the innovation lies in the details, because Apple has made three important adjustments.
Extended reach for more possibilities
One point of criticism of the first AirTag was its limited range. The AirTag 2 aims to improve this. Thanks to technical improvements, the device will work more reliably over longer distances. Whether you use your AirTag in a fully packed backpack or a piece of checked luggage at the airport, tracking will be easier and more precise.
New radio chip: More precision and efficiency
The AirTag 2 will be equipped with a revised radio chip. This not only provides an improved range but also a faster and more precise connection. This means that you can navigate to your lost item even more precisely - and with less energy consumption.
Data protection becomes a priority
One of the biggest challenges for Apple was criticism of data protection. Some users have misused AirTags to track people without their consent. Particularly problematic: Modified AirTags in which the speaker was deactivated made it difficult for potential victims to discover the devices. Apple has recognized this problem and is relying on improved security mechanisms in the AirTag 2:
- Speakers can no longer be easily deactivated.
- Suspicious activities are better detected and reported.
- Tighter integration with iOS to alert users even faster if an unfamiliar AirTag is detected near them.
code names and development status
The new model is codenamed "B589" and is already in advanced manufacturing testing, according to Gurman. This is a clear sign that the release is not far away. For comparison: The first AirTag was codenamed "B389" and took almost two years to develop. The rapid progress curve of the AirTag 2 shows that Apple is building on the experience with the first generation.
AirTag 2: Progress in functionality and security
The AirTag 2 promises to be an all-round improved tracking device. With an extended range, an optimized radio chip and an increased focus on data protection, Apple is specifically addressing criticisms and creating an even more user-friendly product. While the design remains familiar, the inner values of the AirTag 2 bring significant progress. It is a product that should be of interest to both everyday users and tech-savvy customers. The focus on data protection also shows that Apple not only delivers innovations but also takes responsibility. (Photo by Masarik / Bigstockphoto)
