Amazon is facing a major change in its hardware division. Until now, the company has been known primarily for affordable, functional devices that were mass-produced rather than focused on the highest quality. That could soon change. According to a recent report, Amazon is planning a fundamental overhaul of its product line. The company appears to be taking strong cues from Apple. High-quality materials, improved craftsmanship, and a clearer strategy will be the focus in the future.
With Alexa+, Amazon has already set the course for a new era of its software. But the hardware is also set to get an upgrade. The new head of devices, Panos Panay, brings a wealth of experience to the table. At Microsoft, he previously led the successful Surface product line, ensuring a combination of high-quality design and powerful technology. Now he wants to achieve the same for Amazon. His vision is clear: No device should have to make compromises anymore.
Amazon does not compromise on hardware
In a conversation with Bloomberg, Panay emphasized that all future Amazon devices will be developed with the same level of care, whether they are affordable entry-level models, core products, or premium devices. Customers should benefit from better speakers, longer battery life, and improved security. His standards are high:
I want every single product we ship to be perfect – period.
New product strategy: Less, but better
To date, Amazon has developed many different devices, from inexpensive tablets to Echo speakers in numerous variants. This strategy is now set to change. Panay announced that Amazon will be more selective in the future. Instead of launching a multitude of products, the focus will be on the most important devices. This means that Amazon could concentrate more on establishing a clear, well-thought-out product line – similar to Apple, which deliberately keeps its product range lean (via Bloomberg).
Could Amazon enter new markets?
A particularly exciting aspect of the report: Amazon could develop augmented reality glasses and wearable devices for the wrist in the future. This would put the company in direct competition with Apple, which is already active in these areas with the Apple Watch and the Vision Pro. It's still unclear what specific products Amazon is planning, but it shows that the company is committed to evolving and exploring new technologies.
When can we expect the first new devices?
According to the report, the first results of this new strategy won't be visible until fall. This means customers can expect new devices towards the end of the year at the earliest. Until then, it remains to be seen exactly what Amazon's new hardware will look like and whether the company can truly compete with Apple.
Is Amazon on its way to becoming a premium brand?
Amazon's decision to focus more on quality and a clear product strategy could cast the company in a new light. While it has so far been known primarily for affordable, practical hardware, it could become a serious competitor to premium brands like Apple in the future. Whether this plan will work remains to be seen in the coming months. (Photo by Claudio Caridi / Bigstockphoto)
