At WWDC 2021, Craig Federighi announced SharePlay, a new feature that will enable sharing of streaming content on FaceTime calls across the entire ecosystem.
In iOS 15, many existing functions are revised and expanded. New features are also added, including SharePlay. explained Federighi:
We love sharing experiences, and that's why we created SharePlay. SharePlay is a powerful new set of shared experience features you can enjoy when you're on a FaceTime call.
SharePlay: Developers get access to new API
Apple's new feature includes music, movies and TV shows "while having a rich, real-time connection with your friends," he added. Users can also share their screens and bring apps into their calls. This includes several major streaming services, although Netflix is not among the services included. In addition to Apple Music and the Apple TV app, these include:
- Disney+
- Hulu
- HBO Max
- Paramount+
- Twitch
- TikTok
- Pluto TV
- Master Class
- the NBA app
The API will be made available to developers to make more apps available in SharePlay. Users will also be able to press play in Apple Music and share music over a FaceTime call. The functionality is expected to arrive this fall along with iOS 15. (Photo by Daria Kulkova / Bigstockphoto)
