iOS 15.4 is currently in beta testing and is therefore available as a preview for registered developers and volunteer testers. But when will iOS 15.4 be released to all users?
The new iOS update includes a number of notable new features. But before we tackle the question of when iOS 15.4 will be released, let's recap what's new. Here's a quick overview. The biggest change is probably support for Face ID when wearing a mask. Apple introduced support for unlocking the Apple Watch on the iPhone last year, but it's now clear that this was originally just a stopgap solution. iOS 15.4 offers a much more advanced solution for using Face ID with a mask. Apple explains that it scans the "unique features around the eye area" to authenticate you with Face ID while wearing a mask.
iPadOS 15.4 & macOS Monterey 12.3 bring Universal Control
The downside is that the new feature “Use Face ID with a mask” is limited to iPhone 12 and newer. So if you have an iPhone X, iPhone XS or iPhone 11, you won’t be able to use this new feature. The reason for this is not yet known – you can find out more about this topic here. iPadOS 15.4 and macOS 12.3, which are expected to be released together with iOS 15.4, also support Universal Control. Universal Control was first announced at WWDC last summer and allows you to control multiple iPads and Macs with a single mouse, keyboard and trackpad. In addition, the updates bring over 37 new emojis and many smaller improvements and optimizations. But now we come to the question of when iOS 15.4 and Co. will officially be released.
When will iOS 15.4 be released?
Apple typically releases a new beta version every two weeks, which spans between four and six cycles. Bloomberg recently reported that Apple is targeting the release of iOS 15.4 for the first half of March. This is consistent with reports that Apple plans to hold a virtual event on March 8 to unveil a new iPhone SE and a redesigned iPad Air. With that in mind, it is likely that Apple will also discuss iOS 15.4 during the March 8 event. The release could then take place as early as a week later. Apple prefers to release new software updates on Tuesdays, so releasing iOS 15.4 on March 15 would make sense. Whether that will ultimately be the case remains to be seen.
