Anyone who uses the desktop version of WhatsApp should urgently update the application. The reason for this is a security vulnerability that is present in both the Mac and Windows versions.
The latest WhatsApp update – version 0.4.316 – was released about a week ago and is intended to close a dangerous security hole. The exploit was only recently discovered and allows attackers to access files. The security hole was discovered by Gal Weizman, a security researcher, and published it. According to the report, it is based on an earlier exploit that made it possible to fake replies to original texts.
"Quote" function allows change of identity
According to Weizman, the vulnerability would allow the sender to be changed if an attacker uses the "quote" function. The person does not even have to be a member of a group - the security researcher emphasizes. In addition to text messages, website links can also be posted using this method. The dangerous thing about this is that group members could be deceived and directed to dangerous websites. Malicious code would then be able to access files - both on Mac and Windows. That's why the latest WhatsApp update for desktop (version 0.4.316) is strongly recommended. (Photo by Tikofff1 / Bigstockphoto)
