In a continued effort to ensure maximum security, Apple has extended Lockdown Mode to Apple Watch. This new feature, first introduced with iOS 16, iPadOS 16, and macOS Ventura, is designed to fend off targeted cyberattacks on a "very small number" of vulnerable users, such as journalists, activists, and government employees.
With watchOS 10, users can enable Lockdown Mode on their Apple Watch if they already use it on their iPhone. This mode offers an extremely high level of security and includes strict restrictions on apps, websites and features.
Lockdown mode in watchOS 10 – security at the touch of a button
Originally, the lockdown mode included the following protective measures:
- Messages app restrictions: Lockdown mode blocks most types of message attachments, except images, and certain features, such as link previews, are unavailable.
- Limit FaceTime calls and invitations: Incoming FaceTime calls from unknown contacts are blocked. Likewise, invitations to other Apple services from uninvited people are restricted.
- Web security measures: In Safari and other WebKit browsers, complex web technologies and browsing features, including just-in-time (JIT) JavaScript compilation, are disabled. Exceptions can be made for trusted websites.
- Restrictions in the Photos app: Shared albums will be removed from the Photos app and invitations to shared albums will be blocked.
- Blocking wired connections: Lockdown mode blocks wired connections to other devices or accessories.
- Protection against configuration profiles and Mobile Device Management (MDM): Installing configuration profiles and logging into Mobile Device Management (MDM) are not possible in lockdown mode.
Apple recently announced in a press release that Lockdown Mode protection features have been implemented in watchOS 10. These improvements include more secure wireless defaults, optimized media handling, default media sharing options, improved sandboxing, and network security.
