Apple CEO Tim Cook gave a short speech at the 2020 United Nations Climate Action Summit on Saturday. Cook addressed the need for countries to act quickly to combat climate change.
The Climate Ambition Summit 2020 was held virtually due to the COVID-19 pandemic and co-hosted by the United Nations, the UK and France. In his short speech, Cook pointed out that Apples Plan to be 100 percent carbon neutral across the entire supply chain by 2030 is “unrivalled ambitious.”
Apple CEO: “We have presented an unparalleled ambitious plan”
This is an important meeting, and at Apple, we do not take our presence in this group lightly. We wear it as a badge of duty. At this moment of historic urgency, every leader of nations, companies, and communities has a special burden to bear. This year, Apple accelerated our progress. We became carbon neutral for our global corporate emissions. We already support 95 of our suppliers in transitioning to 100% renewable energy, and a number of them are growing.
We have unveiled an unparalleled ambitious plan to achieve carbon neutrality across our entire supply chain and product use by 2030, 20 years ahead of the United Nations target. We see every part of our devices' lifecycle, from design to manufacturing, durability, repair and recycling, as an opportunity for environmental innovation that will bring us closer to our goal of a closed supply chain.
Tim Cook: “We at Apple are proud to be your partner”
The Apple boss also stressed that "the choice between the bottom line and the future of our planet is a false one." If countries work together, Cook said, the world can move to a "carbon-neutral economy."
The choice between the bottom line and the future of our planet is a false one, and every new green innovation offers proof of that. This is not the time for changes in margins. Together, we can move to a carbon-neutral economy and usher in a new era of inclusive opportunity. This is a moment for ambition, collaboration, and leadership. At Apple, we are proud to be your partner, and we call on companies and governments around the world to do everything in our power to make 2021 the year we turn things around for good.
