With the release of iOS 18.1, Apple Intelligence is also coming to the iPhone. This feature promises exciting new possibilities, but it also brings with it increased storage requirements.
According to a document from Apple (via 9to5mac), which was released with the beta version of iOS 18.1, Apple Intelligence requires around 4 GB of storage space on the iPhone when installed. This mainly affects the newer devices, such as the iPhone 15 Pro and the iPhone 16. Interestingly, Apple has not yet provided any precise information on the storage requirements for iPads and Macs. It seems that the additional storage space is only important for iPhones for now. The documentation states:
Apple Intelligence is available on iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, all iPhone 16 models, and iPad and Mac models with M1 and later. iPhone devices require 4GB of storage.
Future expansions: More storage requirements expected
The 4GB of storage is just the beginning, however. In a footnote, Apple points out that the storage requirements for Apple Intelligence will increase as more features are introduced. How much more storage will be needed in the future is currently unclear, but it could well be that the need increases to 8GB or more in the coming months.
Which devices are compatible with Apple Intelligence?
Apple Intelligence is currently available on the following devices:
- iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max
- All iPhone 16 models
- iPads and Macs with M1 chip or higher
However, there is no exact information about the storage requirements for iPads and Macs yet, so different requirements may apply here.
This is how much iPhone storage space Apple Intelligence really requires
With the introduction of Apple Intelligence, iOS 18.1 brings exciting new features, but they also require more storage space. Currently, users have to keep around 4 GB free on their iPhone to be able to use Apple Intelligence. Since the storage requirements are likely to increase with future updates, it is worth planning for more space in the long term. (Image: Apple)
